If the age-old adage, “you are what you eat” is true, then a lot of people are in for some serious health problems as they get older. This has nothing to do with if you exercise or not but it has everything to do with the type of foods you’re eating and how much of those foods you eat. The fact is: If you like certain foods and eat a certain type of diet, then chances are you may be driving your health straight into the ground.
The need to fuel the body by eating properly is very important. You cannot out train a poor diet. Start eating more whole foods and less of the processed foods that have become so much of your under-nourishment. Your muscles and bones will get more of the nutrients they need to keep you going longer with greater ease. As you age, this will become a paramount consideration.
Western-Type Diet and Your Mortality
Do you enjoy sweet meats and treats? Do you consume fried foods on a regular basis? Are the only grains you get refined and processed? And, do you regularly consume whole milk dairy products or fatty creamer? If you do, then chances are you regularly consume a Western-type diet. And this diet, research suggests, may be one factor associated with a decrease in your lifespan. Here’s what the study’s researchers found:
• They noted that diet was associated with good or poor health as you get older.
• They examined whether diet, assessed at midlife, was associated with different aging phenotypes (the physical appearance of men that results from the interaction between a genotype and the environment).
• They discovered that a low adherence to a diet that followed the type of food, as stated above, may be associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular for those who followed a Western-Type Diet had lower odds of ideal aging, which was independent of other health behaviors.
“By considering healthy aging as a composite of cardiovascular, metabolic, musculoskeletal, respiratory, mental, and cognitive function, the resent study offers a new perspective on the impact of diet on aging phenotypes.”
So although the foods eaten in the typical Western diet may taste good, they may be extremely bad for your health. In fact, they may increase things like heart disease, diabetes, some cancers, and, according to this study, premature death.
In order to reverse the harmful trends, you need to do the following:
• Eat a healthy diet that contains lean proteins, healthy carbohydrates (legumes, sprouted-grain breads, etc.) healthy fat, and plenty of fruits and vegetables as the ideal diet plan for losing weight, improving your overall health, and reducing your disease risk.
• You need to exercise which has been shown to reduce blood pressure, cholesterol levels, blood sugar, and other contributing factors that may lead to premature death.
